Day 4 - Random thoughts from class

Below are random thoughts from class today:

  • I absolutely hate web quests.
  • Where can I buy SPSS?  I heard I could buy it on campus but nobody knows where.
  • World builder video was pretty cool...
  • I need to learn how to juggle better.  Maybe I should have started with the colored tissue paper like everyone else who can juggle did.
  • Attachment downloads!
  • I need four more hours in the day... or I could do like soldiers did in WW2 and just take several 20 minute power naps throughout the day.
  • Running out of time, need to update my proposal Ch. 1 and 2 with the new WWC stuff.
  • Movie maker = movie magic!

Day 3 ... Questions for Dr. Dunn

Below is a list of questions that are popping into my head as I sit here enjoying class:

Dissertations Questions:

  1. Where do I buy the SPSS on campus?  I hear it is cheaper on campus, where do I get it?
  2. Review of Literature - on all of the Liberty templates I have read and every professor I have talked to about the RoLa one of the stresses is on the Theoretical or Conceptual Framework.  When I ask for clarity on this, the professors start with theories of learning (constructivism, cognitive theories, ...) and then naturally focus down to the gaps in the literature and how your study fills these gaps.  Okay, I get that but whenever I download and read a dissertation's RoLa, from Liberty or elsewhere, I have NOT RUN ACROSS A SINGLE RoLa THAT DOES THIS!  What's the deal?
  3. I have emailed several professors about becoming my chair and got a positive return from one professor and I was given permission to send him a  preliminary summary of my study.  I haven't heard back from him in nearly 3 weeks...
    1. What is the standard waiting period? Should I be worried that he isn't interested?
    2. Should I continue to send out stuff to possible chairs or wait till I get a response from this professor?
  4. Did I mention the RoLa question?
Technology Questions:
  1. Why can't I copy and paste from a pdf anymore?  Is this a computer problem or an adobe acrobat change?
  2. Table of Contents and styles - I have the parts of my proposal in different microsoft documents, what is the best way merge these documents and still have the TOC auto-update without having to go heading by heading?
... more to come...

Day 2

Well amigos, day 2 has come and went.  We had a very busy day, learning how to use Microsoft Access among other things.  In the afternoon we had a chance to work with our presentation group.  We decided to work separately and hopefully my teammates are making progress.  I feel pretty good about my part, just putting some finishing touches on it now...

... and now it is nearly 8:00pm and I'm off to the Library to work on my proposal.

EDUC 730 - Day 1

Well today we had our first class and just in case Dr. Dunn is reading this blog, class was AMAZING, ENERGIZING, and quite frankly the greatest class of all time!  I especially liked our brief discussion on nano robots being injected into cancer patients.  If we are really that far along then how close are we to slowing aging to the point where we are able to live for hundreds of years?  Science fiction stuff, but still pretty interesting.

Now to the big event of the day - Review of Literature (ROLA) Presentations!  From what I understand from our group discussion with Dr. Dunn, the ROLA should start very broad and logically move into a more focused direction that leads readers to the study question(s) to be answered.  Below is the beginning of our outline for our mobile technology / mobile learning topic.  Any feedback would be great...

EDUC 730: My Thoughts on Technology in General

Hello All,

This being my first blog, I hope everyone will forgive me if I am unaware and accidentally violate any blogger etiquette.  I have been instructed in EDUC 730 to begin a blog and to discuss technology in general and so here it goes...

I agree with Jim Collin's idea of technology in his book, Good to Great, as an "accelerator."  I think technology can be fantastic if it is used to streamline processes, organize, automate protocols, improve communication and generally increase the speed and productivity of our daily lives.

I don't agree with it being used as a babysitter, or as something to fill up your time.  I don't sit around surfing the net, watching tv (I didn't turn my tv on at all yesterday, thank you very much), playing games on my iphone, or any of the other mindless things I see people use technology for.  I don't have that much time to waste in my life and if I did, I would probably find something productive to do.
